不思議な町　

ポートエリザベスです。
不思議と言うのも大げさな話なんですが
ここ、夏なのか冬なのかさっぱり分かりません。

昨日の朝部屋を出たら風が冷たくて上着がいるかな
なんて思っていたら午後は40℃超しましたよ。ここは砂漠か?!
昼に町中でランチを買ったもののその油を見るだけで吐きそうになり
結局私たち3人はホテルに戻ってそうめん食べちゃいました。

「あー仕事したくない。泳ぎたい。あなたも水着買っておいでよ。」
と言われるがままにモールに落とされ水着を探す。
探せぞ探せぞどう見てもモールは秋冬モードで
売っているものはブーツ、セーター、コート。
でも歩いてる人たちタンクトップにショートパンツに裸足なんですけど。
結局水着を見つけられず(ナイロビから持ってこなかった私も悪いが)
せめて足だけでもつかろうと海に向かう。

ビーチ寒い！
顔を引きつらせながら結局冷たい冷たいインド洋に一応足を入れて見ても
もう体中鳥肌立ってました。
言い出しっぺさんはそれでもゴーグルをはめて全身入りました。根性だ！
水着買わなくて本当に良かった。

今日は曇り時々暴雨で朝の太陽に騙されて半袖で出勤してしまいました。

これからはタンクトップにシャツを羽織ってセーターを持ってホテルを出ます。

Port Elizabeth…Strange place
I don’t really know if it’s summer or winter.

When I left my room in the morning yesterday, the wind was very cool.
But in the afternoon, it reached over 40 degrees! Is this a desert??

We bought some lunch in town but looking at oily food made us really sick.
So we went back to the hotel and had some cold Japanese noodles.

Then my boss says “I don’t feel like working, I want to swim!
Why don’t you go and buy a swim wear?”
So there I was, in the mall.
I could only see boots, sweaters, coats…it’s winter season here.
But then people are walking around in tank-tops, shorts, barefoot.
At the end I couldn’t find a swim wear
(Well I should have brought it from Nairobi in the first place…)
And we headed for the beach even just to dip my feet in the water.

Now it was cold!!!
My body was all goose bumps with my feet in the cruelly cold Indian Ocean.
The boss who suggested all this, however, jumped into the water with his pride.
Now imagine if I had bought a swim wear…thank goodness!

The sun was shining brightly this morning, and completely tricked me into
Freezing in heavy rain in the afternoon.

I will put on a tank-top, and a shirt with a sweater in my bag from tomorrow!
