Pride - 誇り

Got a flu...very irritating...
We call it "The Romanian Flu" because my boyfriend's boss
got it from the Romanian consulate...
At least I don't have fever, and can function pretty good.

Anyways...

There's this parking guy on Long Street.
Shamefully, I do not know his name.
He's almost always there when I need a parking on the street.
It's quite amazing how he can spot my car from quite a distance,
and have the parking space ready by the time I get to him.

There are many parking boys in Cape Town.
Most of them appear out of nowhere only when you are leaving, and say,
"Your car is safe! I've been watching it!".
So, whether this guy has been watching your car or not, you just give
some change anyway.
Some of them do lead you out of the parking, and some just leave
as soon as they've received the money...

It doesn't bother me much as long as my car is safe,
but I wouldn't really want to pay someone for just running up
the street, pretending that he has been there watching my car.

But this particular guy is different.
He opens the door of my car like a chauffeur,
then tells me to lock the door after getting in,
of course, leads me out of the parking,
or even escorts me to my next destination if I have to walk alone.

He is a professional parking marshal.

It really makes a difference when someone does something
whole-heartedly.
Whether you are a parking marshal, a waiter, a police man,
a cleaner, a teacher, a receptionist, a driver, whatever...
It's really nice to see that this person is proud of her/his job,
and is really dedicated not only to simply perform the duty,
but even go beyond.

I will ask his name next time.

風邪ひいた～。
もともとルーマニア領事館の人から伝染されたルーマニア風邪
と呼んでいる。
まあ、熱もないし普通に生活はできるからいいけど。

それはとにかく。。。

ロング・ストリートでいつもお世話になってる
パーキング・ボーイの人の話。
お恥ずかしながら、名前はまだ知らない。
ほぼ、いつも同じ角にいて、パーキングを確保してくれる。
かなり遠くにいてもちゃんと見つけてくれて、
私がその角に着くときにはパーキングが用意されている。

街にはパーキング・ボーイと呼ばれる人がたくさんいる。
駐車スペースを探していた時はどこにもいなかったくせに
車を出すときになると、どこからか突然現れて
「君の車、ちゃんと見てたから大丈夫だよ！」と声をかけてくる。
この人物が本当にちゃんと私の車を見張っていたかどうかは
別として、仕方がないので小銭を渡す。
そこから車を出しやすいように指示を出してくれる人もいれば
小銭を受け取った瞬間、また闇に消える人もいる。

これがここの文化でもあるし、別にいいけど
ただ道をダッシュで走ってきて、見てもいなかったのに見ていた
という人にお金を払うのも不思議なシステムだ。

ただ、このロング・ストリートのお兄ちゃんは違う。
お抱え運転手かのように車のドアを開けてくれるし
車に乗ったら「ちゃんと鍵しろよ！」って言ってくれるし
パーキングから出るまでちゃんと見ていてくれるし
一人で少し歩かなきゃいけなければエスコートもしてくれる。

彼はプロのパーキング・マーシャルだ。

人が何かをする時、心がこもっているのといやいやとでは違う。
パーキング・ボーイでも、ウェイターでも、警察官でも、
お掃除屋さんでも、受付嬢でも運転手でも何でも。。
自分の仕事に誇りを持って、やるべきことはもちろん、
それ以上のことができる人を見るのはすごく気分が良い。

今度会ったらパーキングの人の名前を聞こう。
